Description
Marchese Antinori Solaia Toscana IGT is one of the original Super Tuscans, a Cabernet-led red grown on the Tignanello estate in the heart of Chianti Classico.
Solaia comes from a steep, stony, south-west facing slope on the Tignanello estate at Santa Cristina in the Val di Pesa, between Florence and Siena; the name means, roughly, the sunny one. Piero Antinori and the winemaker Giacomo Tachis first made it in 1978, at a time when planting Cabernet Sauvignon in Chianti country put a wine outside the rules and into the humble table wine category. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the blend, with Sangiovese and a portion of Cabernet Franc, matured in French oak barriques. Alongside Tignanello it changed the way the world saw Tuscan wine, and the Antinori family has been in the trade since 1385.
A wine for roast and grilled red meats, game and aged cheeses; open it well ahead and serve at around 18 degrees.
