Description
Mas de Libian Côtes du Rhône Bout d'Zan is a biodynamic Grenache-led red from the Ardèche side of the southern Rhône.
Côtes du Rhône covers a wide sweep of the south, and the best examples come from growers working specific higher sites rather than the valley floor. Mas de Libian is a long-established Ardèche estate farmed biodynamically, and Bout d'Zan has become one of its most consistent wines. The fruit comes from 35-year-old vines rooted across a range of highland soils, some on galets roulés, the rolled alluvial pudding stones of the region, some on sandy clay, and some lower parcels on limestone. The blend runs to roughly 75 per cent Grenache and 25 per cent Syrah, co-fermented and then raised in a mix of Stockinger foudre and cement vat, so the fruit stays bright and the tannins fine. The result is perfumed and savoury rather than heavy, with sage and rosemary alongside the red fruit.
Drink now and over the next four years. Serve at 16-18°C with grilled lamb, ratatouille or a herb-crusted rack.
