Description
Bout d'Zan is Mas de Libian's Côtes du Rhône from thirty-five-year-old biodynamic vines on the Ardèche side of the river.
The estate lies at Saint-Marcel-d'Ardèche, on the right bank opposite Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where Hélène Thibon farms biodynamically and still works some rows with a horse. The vines for this cuvée are rooted across a range of highland soils: galets roulés, the rolled alluvial pudding stones familiar from across the river, some sandy clay, and lower parcels on limestone. The blend runs about seventy-five per cent Grenache to twenty-five per cent Syrah, co-fermented rather than blended after the fact, and raised in a mix of Stockinger foudre and cement vats. It keeps a purity and charm often lost in warmer expressions from the region, with crunchy red fruit, a plump mid-palate, brown spice and a savoury, iodine-tinged undercurrent running through a long, sappy finish.
Drinking well now and good for four or five years; serve at 16-18°C, lightly chilled if you like, with charcuterie, roast lamb or grilled vegetables.
