Mas de Libian Côtes du Rhône Bout d'Zan Rouge 2022

Mas de Libian Bout d'Zan is a biodynamic Côtes du Rhône grown on the higher ground of the Ardèche, on the western edge of the appellation.

The Ardèche side of the Southern Rhône sits higher and cooler than the valley floor, which shows in the freshness of the wines. Mas de Libian farms biodynamically there, and Bout d'Zan comes from 40-year-old vines spread across a range of the estate's soils: galets roulés, the rolled alluvial pudding stones familiar from Châteauneuf, along with sandy clay and lower-lying limestone parcels. The blend is roughly 75 per cent Grenache to 25 per cent Syrah, and the two varieties are co-fermented rather than blended after the fact — Hélène Thibon's father put it as the earlier you consummate the marriage, the better the relationship. A portion of ripe Syrah stems went into this ferment for lift, and the wine was raised in a mix of Stockinger foudre and cement vats.

Ready now and will hold four to five years. Serve at 16°C with grilled lamb, sausages with lentils or a vegetable tagine.
