Description
Mas de Libian Bout d'Zan is a biodynamic Côtes du Rhône from 40-year-old vines in the high country of the Ardèche.
The Ardèche flank of the Southern Rhône lies higher and cooler than the appellation's heartland, which is why its wines can carry ripeness without heaviness. Mas de Libian farms biodynamically here, and Bout d'Zan draws on a spread of the estate's soils: galets roulés, the rolled alluvial pudding stones, together with sandy clay and lower-lying limestone parcels. The blend is around 75 per cent Grenache to 25 per cent Syrah, and the two co-ferment rather than being blended afterwards, a practice Hélène Thibon inherited from her father. Some ripe Syrah stems were included in this year's ferment to add freshness and lift. Maturation takes place in a mix of Stockinger foudres and cement vats, with no new oak, so the fruit and the fine-grained tannin carry the wine.
Ready now and will hold four to five years. Serve at 16°C with grilled lamb, merguez or a ratatouille.
