Mas de Libian Côtes du Rhône Khayyâm 2022

Mas de Libian Côtes du Rhône Khayyâm comes from a single high plot above the house, named for the eleventh-century Persian poet Omar Khayyam.

Mas de Libian farms biodynamically at Saint-Marcel-d'Ardèche, on the right bank of the southern Rhône where the plateau rises away from the river. This bottling comes entirely from one highland parcel at the top of that plateau, surrounded by forest and littered with galets roulés, planted between 1960 and 1980 mainly to Grenache with 15% Syrah and 15% Mourvèdre. Around half the wine was aged in large casks on its lees, which builds a supple, layered texture around a structure that stays firmly food-friendly. Hélène Thibon describes it as the spiciest and most exotic of the range, and it is the estate's cuvée for cold weather rather than a warm afternoon.

Drinking well now and good for six to eight years, though it repays at least an hour in a decanter. Serve at 16-18°C with a beef daube, slow-cooked lamb or a pork and herb terrine.
