Mas de Libian Côtes du Rhône Khayyâm Rouge 2020

Khayyâm is Mas de Libian's Côtes du Rhône from a single high plot of galets roulés on the Saint-Marcel-d'Ardèche plateau, named after the eleventh-century Persian poet and mathematician Omar Khayyam.

Mas de Libian lies on the right bank of the Rhône in the Ardèche, at the northern edge of the southern Rhône. The Côtes du Rhône appellation covers a great deal of ground on both banks, so quality turns on the individual site; this one is a highland plot above the house at the top of the Saint-Marcel-d'Ardèche plateau, littered with the smooth rolled stones known as galets roulés that hold the day's heat. The vines were planted between 1960 and 1980, mostly to Grenache, with 15 per cent Mourvèdre and 10 per cent Syrah. Around 30 per cent of the wine was aged on lees in large casks, which brings a supple, layered texture, while the rest keeps the bright, cleansing structure that makes the cuvée such an easy drink.

Ready now and good for three or four years. Serve at 16°C with grilled lamb, ratatouille or a hard sheep's cheese.
