Mas de Libian Vin de France Khayyâm 2023

Mas de Libian Vin de France Khayyâm is a biodynamic Grenache-led red from a single highland plot on the Saint-Marcel-d’Ardèche plateau, named after the eleventh-century Persian poet Omar Khayyam.

Mas de Libian farms on the right bank of the southern Rhône in the Ardèche, where the family has worked the land for generations and where Hélène Thibon now makes the wines biodynamically. This cuvée comes from one plot above the house at the top of the plateau, ringed by forest and littered with galets roulés, the smooth rounded stones that mark so much of the southern Rhône. It was planted between 1960 and 1980, mainly to Grenache with 15 per cent Syrah and 15 per cent Mourvèdre. Around half the wine was aged in large casks on lees, which builds a supple, layered texture around the bright, food-friendly structure. Hélène describes it as the most oriental and spiciest wine in the range, and it is bottled as Vin de France rather than under an appellation.

Drink over the next five to eight years, and decant for at least an hour. Serve at 16-18°C with slow-cooked braises, winter stews or grilled sausages.
