Description
Mas de Libian Vin de France Vin de Pétanque is a biodynamic southern Rhône red made for the table rather than the cellar.
Mas de Libian farms at Saint-Marcel-d'Ardèche, on the high right-bank country of the southern Rhône, and this cuvée is drawn from an assortment of the estate's terroirs — clay and limestone, galets roulés and sandy parcels. The base is high-grown Grenache at around 75%, with roughly equal parts Mourvèdre and Syrah, all destemmed, plus a little Counoise and Vaccarèse from decade-old plantings of these two southern Rhône natives and, this year, a splash of Couston. The name refers to the Provençal game of boules, which sets the tone: there was a short five-day maceration, the wine was raised entirely in concrete tank, and it was bottled unfiltered with only a very small sulphur addition. The estate is farmed biodynamically, with horses used in the vineyard.
Made to be drunk young, over the next two to three years. Serve slightly cool at 16°C with anything off the barbecue, grilled sausages or a tomato salad.
