Description
Mas de Libian Vin de Pétanque is a biodynamic southern Rhône red named after the Provençal game of boules and built for the same unhurried company.
Mas de Libian sits at Saint-Marcel-d’Ardèche on the right bank of the southern Rhône, where the Thibon family farms biodynamically. The fruit comes from an assortment of terroirs — clay and limestone, galets roulés and sandy parcels — and is led by high-grown Grenache at around 75 per cent, with roughly equal parts Mourvèdre and Syrah making up most of the balance, all destemmed. There is also a little Counoise and Vaccarèse, two southern Rhône natives planted on the estate about a decade ago, plus a splash of Couston, a natural crossing of Grenache and Aubun Noir. Maceration is short, some five days, and the wine is raised only in concrete tank. It goes into bottle unfiltered with the smallest of sulphur additions, and carries the Vin de France designation rather than an appellation.
Drink young, over the next two years. Serve at 16°C, or lightly chilled in summer, with grilled lamb, merguez or a tomato salad.
