Description
Massolino Barbaresco Albesani in magnum is the estate's first single-vineyard Barbaresco, from a 0.6-hectare parcel at the top of the cru.
Albesani lies on the western hills above Neive and is one of the great vineyards of Barbaresco; in his Barbaresco MGA, Alessandro Masnaghetti writes that its combination of soil, stature and exposure makes it one of the greatest sites in the Langhe. Massolino is best known as a Serralunga producer, holds three parcels in Barbaresco, and chose this site for its first single-vineyard wine. Of two hectares in Albesani, just 0.6 hectares go into the bottling, the parcel at the top of the vineyard at 260 metres with the poorest soils and the oldest vines, around fifty years of age. The soils are classic limestone and chalky clay with a south-west exposure. Winemaking mirrors the house Barbaresco except that the wine is aged in a single 3,000-litre Stockinger cask, leaving the perfume clear and the tannins fine. The magnum format slows the wine's development further.
Best given five years and drunk over the following fifteen, with roast veal, truffle pasta or aged Toma. Serve at 16-18°C.
