Massolino Barbaresco Albesani 2019

Massolino Barbaresco Albesani is the estate's first single-vineyard Barbaresco, from 0.6 hectares in one of Neive's most respected crus.

Albesani sits on the western hills above Neive, in the eastern half of the Barbaresco zone. In his Barbaresco MGA, Alessandro Masnaghetti writes that the combination of soil, stature and exposure there creates one of the greatest vineyards of the Langhe. Massolino is a Serralunga d'Alba family estate with a long Barolo record, and when it moved into Barbaresco it chose Albesani for its first single-site bottling; of the two hectares it holds in the vineyard, only 0.6 hectares went into this wine. The vines were planted around fifty years ago at 260 metres, on a southwest exposure, on soils of limestone, clay and marl. Winemaking mirrors the house Barbaresco: wild fermentation in large oak fermenters, roughly three weeks on skins, then ageing in large Slavonian oak casks. The oak is old and large enough to act as a container rather than an ingredient.

It will hold and improve for fifteen years or more and benefits from decanting if opened young; serve at 17-18°C with braised beef, truffle risotto or aged Castelmagno.
