Description
Massolino Barbaresco Albesani is the estate's first single-vineyard Barbaresco, from a 0.6-hectare parcel at the top of the cru.
Albesani sits on the western hills above Neive and is one of the great vineyards of Barbaresco; in his Barbaresco MGA, Alessandro Masnaghetti writes that the combination of soil, stature and exposure makes it one of the greatest sites in the Langhe. Massolino, better known as a Serralunga estate, holds three parcels in Barbaresco and chose this one for its first single-vineyard bottling. Of its two hectares in Albesani, only 0.6 hectares are used here, the parcel at the top of the vineyard at 260 metres with the poorest soils and the oldest vines, at around fifty years. The soils are classic limestone and chalky clay and the exposure is south-west. Winemaking follows the house Barbaresco, with the difference that the wine is aged in a single 3,000-litre Stockinger cask, which leaves the aromatics unmarked and the tannins fine.
Approachable earlier than the estate's Barolo but worth five to fifteen years, it suits roast veal, truffle pasta or aged Toma. Serve at 16-18°C.
