Massolino Barbaresco Albesani 2021

Albesani is Massolino's first single-vineyard bottling in Barbaresco, from a parcel on the western hills above Neive.

Albesani is one of Barbaresco's great vineyards; in his Barbaresco MGA, Alessandro Masnaghetti writes that the combination of soil, stature and exposure creates one of the greatest vineyards of the Langhe. Massolino, a Serralunga d'Alba family, holds parcels in three Barbaresco sites and chose this one when it decided to bottle a cru from the appellation. Of its two hectares in Albesani, only 0.6 hectares went into this wine: the parcel at the top of the vineyard, at 260 metres, where the blue marl soils are poorest and the vines oldest at around 50 years. The ground is classic limestone and chalky clay and the exposure is southwest. The wine is aged in large-format Austrian oak for 18 months, which suits its floral, aromatic character and keeps the texture fine rather than adding weight.

Aromatic and long, with jasmine, red fruit and spice, it is approachable now and will hold for twelve to fifteen years; serve at 17°C with roast poultry, veal or truffle pasta.
