Description
Massolino Barbera d'Alba is raised entirely in cement, drawn from Guyot-trained vines on limestone-rich soil in Serralunga d'Alba.
Barbera d'Alba DOC covers the Langhe hills around Alba, where Barbera has long been the everyday counterpart to Nebbiolo: naturally high in acidity, low in tannin and generous in fruit. Massolino, a family estate in Serralunga d'Alba since 1896, farms two hectares of Guyot-trained Barbera in a limestone-rich vineyard in the commune, and that block is now complemented by fruit from Monforte d'Alba to the west. The wine was fermented for ten to twelve days in cement tanks and then held in the same vessels for a short period before bottling. The absence of oak is deliberate, keeping the focus on the variety's brightness and the savoury edge that Serralunga limestone tends to bring. The bottle is closed under screwcap.
Ready on release and best drunk over the next few years while its freshness is intact. Serve at 16°C with tomato-based pasta, salumi or a simple roast chicken.
