Description
Massolino Barbera d'Alba is a cement-raised Barbera grown largely on the limestone-rich soils of Serralunga d'Alba.
Barbera d'Alba is the everyday red of the Langhe, made in the same villages as Barolo and prized for its dark fruit and high natural acidity rather than for tannin. Massolino is a long-established Serralunga estate whose reputation rests on Barolo, and its two hectares of Barbera sit within that commune's limestone-rich soils, now complemented by fruit from neighbouring Monforte d'Alba. Fermentation runs for ten to twelve days in cement tanks, and the wine is raised in the same vessels for a short period before bottling, so there is no oak character to work through. The palate is deep and pure, with powdery tannins, vibrant acidity and a tangy, perfumed finish. It is bottled under screwcap, which suits a wine made to be drunk for its freshness.
Ready on release and good for around five years, it is a natural match for tomato-based pasta, salumi and roast chicken. Serve at 16-18°C.
