Description
Massolino Barbera d'Alba is a bright, unoaked Barbera grown on the estate's limestone-rich Serralunga vineyards.
Barbera d'Alba is Piedmont's everyday red, naturally high in acidity and low in tannin, and at its best when the fruit comes from good sites rather than the flat land. Massolino has two hectares of Barbera planted across its limestone-rich Serralunga d'Alba vineyards, now complemented by fruit from Monforte d'Alba. Meticulous selection, well-sited vineyards and low yields form the blueprint, as they do for the estate's Barolo. The wine was fermented for 10 to 12 days in stainless steel and cement tanks, then raised in the same vessels for a short period before bottling and release, so nothing sits between the fruit and the drinker. The style is deliberately drink-now: bitter cherry and macerated orange rind, a perfumed and pure palate, a saline edge on the close and just enough refreshing bitterness to keep it on the table.
Drink over the next three to four years, lightly chilled if you like. Serve at 16-18°C with salumi, pizza or a rich tomato pasta.
