Description
Massolino Barolo, first produced in 1911, is the estate's classic cuvée, drawn from seven hectares of prime Serralunga d'Alba vineyard.
Serralunga is the most structured of the Barolo communes, and Massolino has been among its steadiest names for over a century. The most important parcels behind this wine are Briccolina, Collareto, Broglio and Le Turne, dotted around the town itself; Le Turne borders Margheria and Collareto lies next to Vigna Rionda. This release also takes in a little fruit from the estate's Parussi cru and some declassified Vigna Rionda. Vine age ranges from ten to fifty-five years. Half of the wine was fermented in large wooden cask and half in concrete, and the final blend matured for up to thirty months in large Slavonian oak casks. The style is one of perfume and fine tannin rather than extraction, and it is a benchmark for what Serralunga can offer at this level.
In magnum the wine matures more slowly, so a ten to twenty year cellar window is realistic and the format suits a larger table. Serve at 16–18°C with braised beef, agnolotti del plin or aged Castelmagno.
