Description
This is Massolino's classic Barolo, assembled from several of the family's vineyards rather than drawn from a single cru.
Barolo DOCG covers eleven communes in the Langhe hills of Piedmont, and Serralunga d'Alba, where Massolino are based, is the one most consistently associated with tannic structure and long ageing, thanks to its compact limestone and marl soils. The family have been in the village since 1896, when Giovanni Massolino made the first sale of wine; bottling began in 1934, and the fourth generation, Franco, Roberto and Paola, run the estate today, having added the Parussi cru at Castiglione Falletto in 2006, built a new cellar in 2015 and moved into Barbaresco in 2019. This wine draws on several parcels on soils of mixed consistency tending towards limestone, which is the traditional purpose of a straight Barolo. It is given a long fermentation and maceration in oak tini at around 30°C, then up to thirty months in large oak casks, the vessel favoured here because it allows slow oxygen exchange without adding oak flavour, followed by a further rest in bottle.
A useful introduction to the house that will hold for a decade, though it benefits from decanting in its youth. Serve at 16-18°C with braised meats, truffled pasta or aged Parmigiano.
