Description
Massolino's classic Barolo, first produced in 1911, is a blend of seven prime-sited Serralunga d'Alba vineyards.
Serralunga d'Alba is the most structured of the eleven Barolo communes, and this cuvée draws on roughly seven hectares across it. The most important sites, Briccolina, Collareto, Broglio and Le Turne, are dotted around the town itself, with Le Turne bordering Margheria and Collareto lying next to Vigna Rionda, so this is quality real estate for a village wine. There is also a little declassified fruit from the estate's Parussi cru in Castiglione Falletto, and vine age ranges from 10 to 55 years. Massolino's Barolos used to ferment in concrete and have been moving to large wooden casks, a change Giovanni Angeli credits with adding finesse; the cru wines now ferment exclusively in oak while half of this blend still ferments in concrete. It spends around 20 days on skins and matures for 30 months in large Slavonian oak casks.
Lithe and refined, it is already drinking well and will hold for a decade or more; serve at 17°C with braised veal, mushroom risotto or aged Castelmagno.
