Massolino Barolo Margheria 1.5L MAGNUM 2020

Margheria is one of Serralunga d'Alba's most illustrious sites, and the source of the most perfumed of Massolino's three Serralunga crus.

Barolo DOCG is Nebbiolo alone, and Serralunga is usually taken as its most structured commune, so a site that also delivers finesse is worth noting. The Massolino family bought its first parcel in Margheria in 1964 and the remainder came online during the 1970s, bringing the current holding to 1.5 hectares. The vineyard lies at 280 metres and is very chalky, with a high percentage of sand that is generally credited with the elegance of its wines, while a high calcium carbonate content brings mineral energy to the natural depth of Serralunga fruit. Handling follows the pattern of the other crus: fermentation in large oak fermenters, around three weeks on skins, then 30 months in botti and a further year in bottle before release. This is the 1.5-litre magnum.

Open and fine-boned but with ripe fruit and firm structure behind it, this will drink well from now to fifteen years; decant and serve at 17°C with veal, mushroom risotto or hard alpine cheese.
