Description
Massolino Barolo Margheria comes from 1.5 hectares in one of Serralunga d'Alba's most illustrious crus, a chalky, sandy site that gives the estate's prettiest Barolo.
Serralunga d'Alba runs along a narrow ridge on the eastern side of the Barolo zone, and its Helvetian soils are the firmest and most structured in the appellation. Margheria sits at about 280 metres and is unusually chalky and sandy for the commune, a profile that brings elegance and perfume, while its high calcium carbonate content lends mineral drive. The Massolino family bought their first parcel here in 1964 and added the rest through the 1970s. The wine is fermented in large oak fermenters and aged exclusively in large casks, so the oak stays in the background and the site does the talking. The result is floral and red-fruited, framed by fine tannin and tangy acidity.
Approachable earlier than the estate's Vigna Rionda but built for fifteen years or more; decant young. Serve at 16–18°C with braised veal, porcini risotto or aged Piedmontese cheeses.
