Description
Parafada is a 1.2-hectare parcel on a sheltered Serralunga ridge planted to vines averaging around sixty years, the oldest in Massolino's cru range.
Barolo DOCG sits in the Langhe hills of Piedmont, and of its eleven communes Serralunga d'Alba is the one most associated with firm tannin, depth and slow development, a character drawn from its compact, strongly calcareous marls. Massolino have been a family estate in the village since 1896 and hold parcels across several of its best-known vineyards. Parafada lies at about 320 metres with southerly exposure, on mixed, highly calcareous soil, and the ridge shelters it from wind and weather; the family bought it in 1957 and first bottled it on its own in 1990. Franco, Roberto and Paola are the fourth generation to run the estate. The winemaking follows the traditional Serralunga pattern: a long fermentation and maceration in oak tini at around 30°C, then up to thirty months in large oak casks rather than small barrique, and about a year in bottle before release.
This is a Barolo built for the cellar and worth a decade or more of patience, and it repays decanting while young. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef, agnolotti del plin or aged Castelmagno.
