Description
Massolino Barolo Parafada is a single-cru Barolo drawn from vines planted in Serralunga d’Alba in 1957, the oldest on the estate.
Serralunga d’Alba is the Barolo commune most associated with structure, tannin and length, and Parafada sits on a steeply rising, due-south slope between the Gabutti and Lazzarito crus, climbing from 300 to 340 metres. The Massolino family has farmed in Serralunga since 1896, and this 1.2-hectare parcel was their first prime holding, planted in 1957 and still home to the estate’s oldest vines. Those old vines carry smaller berries and give more concentrated fruit, while the dense clay, marl and lime-rich soils of the Formazione di Lequio push the wine towards the deepest and most powerful of Massolino’s three Serralunga crus. The fruit was fermented in large conical oak fermenters with around two weeks on skins, then matured in traditional botti before bottling, an approach the family applies across all three of its cru bottlings.
Firmly structured and built for the cellar, it will reward a decade or more and repays a long decant if opened young; serve at 16–18°C with braised beef cheek, mushroom risotto or aged Castelmagno.
