Description
Massolino Barolo Parafada comes from the family's oldest vines in Serralunga d'Alba, planted in 1957.
Parafada was the Massolino family's first prime parcel in Serralunga d'Alba and still holds their oldest vines, which at sixty-six years produce smaller berries and more concentrated fruit. The 1.2-hectare holding lies between Gabutti and Lazzarito and rises steeply from 300 to 340 metres, facing due south and catching the full face of the sun. Its soils are the dense clay, marl and limestone of the Formazione di Lequio, and the combination of aspect, vine age and that limestone-rich ground gives a denser and more powerful wine than the family's Margheria. Fermentation takes place exclusively in large oak fermenters and ageing exclusively in large casks, with no small barrels at any point. The tannins come through very fine and the wine is balanced, translucent and sculpted, carrying the structural austerity and depth of fruit associated with the site.
It is expressive young but will reward a decade or more in bottle; decant if opening early. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef cheek, game birds or aged Parmigiano.
