Description
Parafada was the Massolino family's first prime parcel in Serralunga d'Alba and is still home to their oldest vines.
Planted in 1957, this 1.2-hectare parcel sits between Gabutti and Lazzarito and rises steeply from 300 to 340 metres, facing due south and catching the full face of the sun. Family legend has it that Giovanni Massolino planted the vines when he was just seventeen; at 66 years of age they now give smaller berries and more concentrated fruit. The soils are dense clay, marl and lime, the Formazione di Lequio, and the combination of aspect, vine age and ground typically produces the densest and most powerful of Massolino's three Serralunga crus. Winemaking is the same across those crus: fermentation in large oak fermenters, around three weeks on skins and long ageing in botti before bottling, with no small-barrel oak used at any stage. This is the three-litre double magnum.
Ripe, fleshy and tightly knitted, it will reward twelve to twenty years in the cellar; decant well ahead and serve at 17-18°C with braised beef, hare or aged hard cheese.
