Description
Parussi is Massolino's only Barolo from outside Serralunga d'Alba, a 1.65-hectare holding at Castiglione Falletto bought in 2006 and first made in 2007.
Castiglione Falletto sits at the centre of the Barolo zone, and its lighter soils give Nebbiolo more perfume and a rounder tannin than the firmer wines of Serralunga. The Parussi parcel lies on a hilltop crest at about 290 metres, with exposure running from south-east round to south-west and a mixed soil high in calcium, planted to vines averaging around forty years. Massolino have been a family estate in Serralunga since 1896, when Giovanni Massolino made the first sale of wine, and the fourth generation, Franco, Roberto and Paola, run it now; Parussi completed the range and gave them a reading of a second commune. Winemaking follows the house pattern for every Barolo: long fermentation and maceration in oak tini at around 30°C, then up to thirty months in large oak casks, then roughly a year resting in bottle in the cool, dark cellars before release.
Accessible earlier than the Serralunga wines but still worth five to ten years; decant if opened young. Serve with braised veal, mushroom or truffle dishes and hard cheese at 16-18°C.
