Massolino Barolo Vigna Rionda 2014

Massolino Barolo Vigna Rionda comes from the most revered vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba, where the family are the largest single holder.

Vigna Rionda has long been regarded as the source of some of the finest and longest-lived Barolo, and Massolino farm 3.5 hectares there, two of them planted to Nebbiolo vines of forty to fifty years. The soil resembles that of the neighbouring Parafada, limey chalky marl, but runs deeper, with more chalk and a higher concentration of minerals and oxidised iron. The site lies at 330 metres with a south to south-westerly aspect that shelters it from northern winds and frost, giving a longer growing season than the surrounding crus. That combination produces wines with an unusual balance of perfume, finesse and structure, and with acidity and tannin that demand extended ageing. The wine is fermented in large wooden cask, spends around twenty days on skins and forty months in botti, and is released with a minimum of six years of age.

Already open enough to enjoy on release, but it will be better again with three to five more years and should be decanted. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef cheek, wild mushroom risotto or aged Castelmagno.
