Description

Massolino's Vigna Rionda comes from the most celebrated vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba and is bottled only as a Riserva, the one wine in the range held back until its sixth year.

Vigna Rionda is a south-west facing amphitheatre on the compact calcareous marl of Serralunga, the commune whose Barolo is traditionally the most structured and slowest to mature of the eleven. The site was singled out as a source of excellent wine in an agricultural survey of 1879; the Massolino family began acquiring parcels there in 1956, inherited from an aunt, Matilde Ornato, and added to the holding in 1967, 1986 and 1990, so that they now farm roughly a quarter of the ten-hectare vineyard. The family have been in the village since 1896, when Giovanni Massolino made the first sale of wine; they started bottling in 1934 and made the first Barolo Vigna Rionda Riserva in 1982. Franco, Roberto and Paola run the estate today. The wine has a long fermentation and maceration in oak tini at around 30°C, then extended ageing in large oak casks and a long rest in bottle.

This is a wine for the patient: a decade minimum, and several decades in a good cellar. Decant well ahead and serve with braised beef, game or aged Castelmagno at 16-18°C.

*Every effort is made to ensure the current vintage is accurate; however, variations can occur. If you are after a specific vintage, please contact us prior to ordering.
