Description
Massolino Barolo Vigna Rionda Etichetta Nera Riserva is the black-label Riserva from Serralunga's most revered cru, released with at least six years' age.
Vigna Rionda is regarded by those who know Serralunga best as one of Barolo's greatest crus, and Massolino is its largest owner with 3.5 hectares, farmed since 1956 and expanded by purchases in 1967, 1985 and 1987. Topsoil is scarce, and the ground beneath belongs to the Lequio Formation, the oldest soil type in the Barolo zone, with limestone at around twenty per cent alongside oxidised iron and other minerals; vigour is held back and the Nebbiolo ripens fully. The vineyard lies between 250 and 360 metres with a south-southwest aspect that shields it from northerly wind and frost. Only about a third of the potential volume is bottled under the single-vineyard label, the rest going into the classic Barolo. Fermentation is in large wooden vats and ageing in botti, and the wine is always released as a Riserva. Only a very small parcel reached Australia.
Give it several years yet, and decant before serving. At 16–18°C it suits braised beef cheek, hare ragù or a well-aged hard cheese.
