Massolino Barolo Vigna Rionda Ris X Anni Museum Release 2004

This is Massolino's Barolo Riserva from Vigna Rionda in its 'Dieci X Anni' guise — the same wine, held by the family for a full ten years from harvest before release.

Vigna Rionda is among the most highly regarded sites in Serralunga d'Alba, the commune whose calcareous marl produces the most structured and slowest-maturing Barolo of all. Massolino has been in Serralunga since 1896 and came into Vigna Rionda in 1956, through a bequest from a great-aunt, adding to it by exchange in 1967 and completing the holding by 1990; the estate now farms three hectares there at around 300 metres, with vines up to fifty years old, and bottled its first Riserva from the cru in 1982. Vinification is traditional — a long fermentation and maceration in oak vats at about 30°C, then up to 42 months in large oak casks. The Dieci X Anni version takes a further six months in large cask and six in stainless steel before bottling, and is then cellared until the decade is up.

Approaching its plateau and good for many years yet. Decant and serve at 16–18°C with braised beef cheek, truffled pasta or aged Parmigiano.
