Description
Massolino Barolo Vigna Rionda Riserva comes from Serralunga's most revered cru, bottled here in magnum.
Vigna Rionda has long been regarded as the finest vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba and a source of some of the longest-lived Barolo. The Massolino family bought their first parcel in 1956 and added adjoining plots in 1967, 1985 and 1987, bringing the holding to 3.5 hectares, of which two are planted to Nebbiolo. There is very little topsoil on the site and the subsoil is unusually rich in limestone, oxidised iron and other minerals. The geology belongs to the Lequio Formation, the oldest in the Barolo area, laid down in the Serravallian period between 13 and 11 million years ago; at roughly 14 per cent, the limestone content is among the highest in the zone. The vines sit at 250 to 360 metres with a south to south-west aspect that shelters them from northerly wind and frost. Low vigour and consistent phenolic ripeness give a wine that balances perfume and finesse against real concentration and structure, with the acidity and tannin the site is known for.
A Riserva built for the long haul and slower still in magnum, it will reward a decade or more in the cellar; serve with braised beef, game or aged Castelmagno at 16-18°C.
