Description
Massolino Barolo Vigna Rionda Riserva comes from Serralunga's most revered cru, on the oldest soils in the entire Barolo zone.
Vigna Rionda has historically been Serralunga d'Alba's greatest vineyard and the source of some of the longest-lived Barolo ever made. The Massolino family took its first parcel in 1956 and bought adjoining land in 1967, 1985 and 1987, bringing the holding to 3.5 hectares, two of them planted to Nebbiolo. There is very little topsoil here; the ground belongs to the Lequio Formation, the oldest in Barolo, laid down in the Serravallian period between thirteen and eleven million years ago, and carries a high concentration of limestone, oxidised iron and other minerals. At roughly fourteen per cent, the limestone content is among the highest in the zone, which limits vigour and gives consistent phenolic ripeness. The vines lie between 250 and 360 metres, sheltered from northerly wind and frost by a south to southwest aspect. As a Riserva the wine is held back for extended ageing before release.
Built for the long haul: give it a decade if you can, and expect it to run for thirty years. Serve at 16-18°C, decanted, with braised beef, game or aged hard cheese.
*Every effort is made to ensure the current vintage is accurate; however, variations can occur. If you are after a specific vintage, please contact us prior to ordering.
