Description
Vigna Rionda is among the most revered crus in all of Barolo, and Massolino, with 3.5 hectares, is its largest owner and the estate most closely identified with the site.
The family has farmed Vigna Rionda since 1956, adding parcels in 1967, 1985 and 1987. There is very little topsoil here, and what there is carries a high concentration of limestone, oxidised iron and other minerals; the soils trace back to the Lequio Formation, the oldest in the Barolo area, and the limestone content of around 20% is among the highest in the zone, limiting vigour and ensuring full phenolic ripeness. The vineyard lies between 250 and 360 metres with a south-southwest aspect that shelters it from northerly winds and frost. Massolino bottle only about a third of the potential volume under this label, with the rest going into the classic Barolo. As a Riserva it is held back longer in cask and bottle before release.
This is a wine for the long haul: give it ten years and expect it to run for thirty. Serve at 16–18°C, decanted, with braised beef, game birds or truffle.
