Description
Massolino Barolo Vigna Rionda Riserva Etichetta Nera is the estate's flagship Serralunga cru in a 1.5-litre magnum, under the black label the family reserves for its very greatest releases.
Vigna Rionda is arguably the most revered vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba and the source of some of the longest-lived Barolo in the region. Massolino took ownership of its first parcel in 1956 and added others in 1967, 1985 and 1987, building a holding of 3.5 hectares, two of them planted to Nebbiolo. The family first bottled the site as a single cru in 1982. The soil is among the oldest terrain in Barolo, comparable to nearby Parafada but deeper and more complex, with a higher limestone content and a marked concentration of minerals and oxidised iron. The vineyard sits at about 330 metres with a south to south-west aspect that shelters it from northern winds and frost. The all-black label is used only for the greatest years of the cru.
This needs many years in the cellar, and the magnum format will slow its development further; serve at 16–18°C with dry-aged beef, braised game or aged hard cheese.
