Description
Vigna Rionda is arguably the most revered vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba, and this Riserva carries Massolino's new all-black label, kept for the estate's greatest years.
Barolo DOCG is made from Nebbiolo alone, and Serralunga d'Alba is its most structured commune, giving wines built for long cellaring. Massolino first bottled Vigna Rionda as a single cru in 1982 and the family took ownership of its first parcel there in 1956, adding further plots in 1967, 1985 and 1987 to reach the 3.5 hectares held today, two of them planted to Nebbiolo. The soil is among the oldest terrain in Barolo, similar to that of the neighbouring Parafada vineyard but deeper and more complex, with a higher limestone content of up to 13% and a strong concentration of minerals and oxidised iron. The site lies at 330 metres with a south to southwest aspect that shelters it from northern winds and frost. The Riserva is fermented and aged in large oak and given extended bottle age before release. This is the five-litre format.
A wine for the long haul, it will repay two decades or more in the cellar and wants a long decant when opened; serve at 17-18°C with braised beef, game or aged Castelmagno.
