Description
Massolino Langhe Nebbiolo blends three Langhe terroirs and is raised in large Slavonian oak for fifteen months.
Langhe Nebbiolo is the region's junior category for the variety, taking in fruit grown outside or declassified from Barolo and Barbaresco, and it is where the grape's perfume can be enjoyed without a long wait. Early releases of this wine came solely from Massolino's younger vines in Serralunga, in effect a declassified Barolo. Two further parcels now go into the blend: Cascina I Maschi in Monforte d'Alba, a cool, chalky site the estate credits with lifted perfume and freshness, and a parcel in Alba on lighter sandy clay that brings depth of fruit. The blend is roughly a third from each. Extraction is very gentle and the wine is aged in large Slavonian oak casks, as with all Massolino Nebbiolo, though for fifteen months rather than the twenty-four or more given to the Barolo. It is bottled under screwcap.
Ready on release and good for five or six years, it works with braised beef, mushroom pasta or a plate of salumi. Serve at 16-18°C.
