Description
Massolino Langhe Nebbiolo in half-bottle blends three Langhe terroirs and is raised in large Slavonian oak for fifteen months.
Langhe Nebbiolo is Piedmont's junior appellation for the variety, covering fruit grown outside or declassified from Barolo and Barbaresco, and it shows the grape's perfume without demanding cellaring. Early releases came only from Massolino's younger vines in Serralunga, effectively a declassified Barolo. The blend now takes in two further parcels: Cascina I Maschi in Monforte d'Alba, a cool, chalky site that lends lifted perfume and freshness, and a parcel in Alba on lighter sandy clay soils that adds depth of fruit, with roughly a third of the wine from each terroir. Extraction is deliberately gentle and ageing takes place in large Slavonian oak casks, as for all the estate's Nebbiolo, but for fifteen months rather than the twenty-four or more given to Barolo. The 375ml format suits a wine drunk young and by the glass.
Ready now and holding for around five years, it suits braised beef, mushroom pasta or salumi. Serve at 16-18°C.
