Massolino Langhe Nebbiolo 375ml 2023

Massolino Langhe Nebbiolo is a three-source Nebbiolo that includes declassified Barolo fruit, offered here in half bottle.

Langhe Nebbiolo is the everyday counterpart to Barolo, made from the same grape but released far younger. Massolino, a Serralunga d'Alba estate with a long history in the commune, draws this wine in equal thirds from three places. The first is parcels of Serralunga vines that do not make the cut for the cru wines, in short declassified Barolo fruit. The second is Cascina I Maschi on the edge of Monforte d'Alba, a cool, chalky site the estate credits with lifted perfume and freshness. The third is a parcel at Alba on lighter sandy-clay soils, which brings fruit generosity. Vinification is in concrete with very gentle extraction, and the wine is aged in large Slavonian oak casks for 12 months, against 24 months and more for the Barolo. The style is ripe and fleshy but fine, with classic powdery tannins and a long, perfumed finish.

Ready now and good for five or six years; the 375ml format suits a single sitting. Serve at 16-18°C with veal, tagliatelle al ragù or roast mushrooms.
