Description
Massolino's Langhe Riesling is grown at around 530 metres at Monforte d'Alba, well above the altitude of their Nebbiolo, and was first made in 2017.
The Langhe DOC is the broad appellation that sits beneath Barolo and Barbaresco, and it permits varieties that fall outside the stricter local denominations, which is how a Piedmontese Riesling comes to be labelled this way. Massolino have been a family estate in Serralunga d'Alba since 1896 and are known above all for Barolo, so this is a small departure from the house range rather than a commercial line. The vineyard lies at about 530 metres on soil of mixed consistency tending towards limestone, and the height and cool nights suit a variety that depends on holding its acidity. The wine is fermented in steel and left in contact with its fermentation lees for eight to ten months, with a portion aged in terracotta amphorae, and it is finished dry.
Drink over the next few years while the aromatics are fresh. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, prosciutto and melon, or a plate of raw seafood.
