Massolino Langhe Riesling 2020

Massolino Langhe Riesling is Riesling grown in Barolo country, from a windswept limestone plot just outside the appellation boundary.

Riesling is not a Piedmontese variety, and the Langhe DOC is the only place it can legally be bottled here. Massolino, a Serralunga d'Alba house best known for its Barolos, planted three clones of Riesling in 2014 on a very rocky, limestone-rich plot in Monforte d'Alba, at the apex of the hill between 450 and 500 metres and just beyond the Barolo boundary. This is the fourth release. After a few years of experimenting with amphorae and various sizes and types of oak, the 2020 was fermented and raised entirely in a 5,000-litre cement tank, on lees, for nine months. Concrete is an uncommon choice for the variety, but Massolino judges that it holds the wine's energy better than wood. Five grams per litre of residual sugar were left to balance the acidity of the site and the year.

Drink over the next five to eight years with trout, roast chicken or a tomato and herb salad. Serve at 10-12°C.
