Description
Massolino Langhe Riesling is grown on limestone just outside the Barolo boundary and raised entirely in cement.
Riesling is a rarity in Piedmont, and Massolino planted three clones of it in 2014 in a cool, windswept parcel in Monforte d'Alba. The plot is rocky and limestone-rich, sitting at the apex of the hill at 450 to 500 metres, just beyond the Barolo appellation boundary. After several years of trialling amphora, steel and various sizes and types of oak, the estate settled on fermenting and raising the wine exclusively in a 5,000-litre cement tank, on lees, for nine months. Concrete is an unusual choice for Riesling, but Massolino argues that the brightness and energy of the wine are better served by a neutral vessel with some textural gain and no oak influence at all. The result is racy and coiled, with lime and chalk rather than any tropical ripeness, and it is bottled under screwcap.
Drink now or over the next six to eight years with grilled fish, sushi or a herb-dressed chicken salad. Serve at 10-12°C.
