Description
Massolino Langhe Riesling is a Piedmontese white grown on a limestone parcel just outside the Barolo boundary and raised entirely in concrete.
The Langhe DOC covers the same hills as Barolo and Barbaresco but allows growers a wider range of varieties, and a handful of Serralunga houses have used it to plant white grapes at altitude. Massolino, based in Serralunga d'Alba and best known for its Barolo, planted three clones of Riesling in 2014 in a cool, windswept parcel at Monforte d'Alba. The rocky, limestone-rich plot sits at the apex of the hill between 450 and 500 metres, high enough to hold acidity through a warm Piedmontese summer. After several years of trials with amphora, steel and oak of various sizes, the wine now ferments exclusively in a single 5,000-litre cement tank and rests there on its lees for nine months, an unusual choice for Riesling that the estate believes best preserves the wine's brightness and energy. It is bottled under screwcap.
Drinking well on release and capable of several years in bottle, it suits trout, veal, delicate antipasti and lighter Asian dishes; serve at 10-12°C.
