Massolino Langhe Riesling 2023

Massolino Langhe Riesling is an unusual Piedmontese Riesling, grown on limestone just outside the Barolo appellation boundary.

The Langhe DOC covers the same hills as Barolo and Barbaresco but allows growers far more latitude in variety and style. Massolino, based in Serralunga d'Alba and best known for its Barolo, planted three clones of Riesling in 2014 in a cool, windswept parcel at Monforte d'Alba. The rocky, limestone-rich plot sits at the apex of the hill at 450 to 500 metres, high enough to hold acidity and just beyond the Barolo boundary. After several years of trials with amphora, steel and various sizes and types of oak, the wine now ferments exclusively in a 5,000-litre cement tank, where it also rests on lees for nine months. The result is textural rather than aromatic in the Germanic sense, with ripe citrus, chalky length and a racy, mouthwatering line that reflects both the limestone and the neutral vessel.

Drink over the next five years, ideally with a little air. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled trout, roast chicken or a plate of prosciutto and fennel.
