MDI Grillo 2023

MDI Grillo is a long-macerated white from a Sicilian variety that has taken well to the Murray Darling.

Back home in Sicily, Grillo's main job is Marsala. It is thought to be a cross of Catarratto and Zibibbo, it thrives on warm volcanic ground, and as luck has it, Mildura suits it just as well. The plantings sit at Vanden estate on VSP trellis, not the regional norm, with Kings Billabong along the boundary cooling things through summer, and the site is farmed sustainably. This skins edition spent 170 days in contact before pressing to old barrique for five months, went through full malolactic and was bottled with no fining and no filtration.

Golden, textured and completely dry, showing dried pear, orange peel, chamomile and a grippy finish. Best at 13 degrees, not straight from the fridge. Serve with roast chicken, grilled haloumi, or a bowl of farro and herbs.
