Description
MDI Picolit is a small-batch skin-contact white from one of Friuli's rarest grapes, grown in Mildura.
Small berries, small bunches, thick skins and intensity out of all proportion to the yield: that combination is why this parcel counts as the jewel of the Pasut vineyard. Whole bunches were hand-harvested and foot-stomped, an old-fashioned start that keeps extraction gentle, and the wine then spent eighteen months in seasoned large-format oak, followed by racking and bottling. Picolit is thin on the ground even in its Friulian homeland and almost unheard of in Australia, so a bottling like this is a curiosity worth paying attention to.
Rich but dry, with poached pear, dried fig, nutty oxidative notes and a long grippy close. Serve it at 13 degrees. It suits slow-roast pork, a mushroom risotto, or simply a piece of aged gouda after dinner.
