MDI Refosco 2022

MDI Refosco is a generous red made from a north-east Italian variety grown at the Chalmers vineyard.

Refosco is a genuine north-eastern Italian grape, dark-skinned and full of character, and it takes to Australian warmth without losing its acid. Fruit for this bottling came from the Chalmers vineyard, and most of it fermented as whole bunches before pressing to old French barrique for maturation on lees. Sulphur was kept to a minimum at bottling. Kevin McCarthy makes these wines to be poured with dinner, and this is a case in point, a big friendly red with none of the sharp elbows the variety can show when it is pushed too hard.

Blue and black fruits, a dusty herbal note and soft, rolling tannin. Plenty of flavour, easy to drink. Serve at 16 degrees with a lasagne, grilled sausages, or slow-cooked beef and polenta. A splash of chill does no harm on a warm night.
