MDI Refosco 2023

MDI Refosco is a medium-bodied red drawn from two Murray Darling vineyards.

Two sites make up the 2023: the Chalmers vineyard and the Duffy vineyard. Chalmers is the warmer of them and brings density, weight and power; Duffy contributes something brighter and more elegant, and the two together give the wine its balance. Most of the fruit fermented as whole bunches before pressing to old French barrique for maturation on lees, with only a minimal sulphur addition at bottling. Refosco remains a rarity in Australia, which is a shame, because it does exactly what a weeknight red should do.

Composed and juicy, with dark plum, violets and a savoury undertow, and tannin that stays out of the way. It disappears from the table quickly. Serve at 16 degrees with pizza, roast chicken or a bowl of ragu.
