MDI Ribolla Gialla 2024

MDI Ribolla Gialla is a long-macerated white grown at Vanden Estate near Mildura.

Of everything in the range, this is the bottling that looks most directly to Josko Gravner, and it is reliably the most hedonistic and textural of them. Ribolla Gialla reads as fairly neutral out in the vineyard; give it skin contact and it turns on. Fruit came from the impeccably managed Vanden Estate beside Kings Billabong and spent 162 days on skins in stainless steel before being drained to three-year-old hogsheads for a few weeks ahead of bottling. Like 2023, the 2024 season brought low yields to the Murray Darling, with kind conditions at harvest that show up in the quality.

Deep amber, with dried apricot, marmalade, walnut skin and a mouth-coating tannin that finishes dry and long. Serve at 13 to 14 degrees in a decent-sized glass, with roast pork, a tagine, or aged cheese and quince paste.
