MDI Sangiovese 2024

MDI Sangiovese is a straightforward, savoury red grown at Mildura in the Murray Darling.

Growing conditions in 2024 gave the Pasut vineyard a rough ride, but the weather turned obliging at harvest and the crop came in small, flavourful and clean. Kevin McCarthy destemmed the fruit and fermented it in tank, which is as much intervention as he considers necessary with well-grown Sangiovese from an established site. Denis Pasut has been farming these rows in Mildura for a long time, and the variety has proven a good fit for a warm inland region most people associate with something far less interesting.

Bright acidity, sour cherry fruit and a dusty savoury finish. It is built for the table, not for contemplation. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees with a pizza margherita, roast vegetables and haloumi, or a simple bolognese.
